INTERNATIONALES MARITIMES MUSEUM
A trip to see submarines, model ships and more

A journey across the world's oceans at the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg
Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of seafaring! The International Maritime Museum Hamburg (IMMH) awaits you in the middle of Hamburg’s Speicherstadt, in the historic Kaispeicher B. On nine decks, you will experience 3000 years of seafaring history – from the first dugout canoes to the gigantic container ships of our time. Founder Peter Tamm Sr. turned his passion into a life’s work and amassed a unique collection that will amaze you.
The vision of Peter Tamm
Prof. Peter Tamm is inextricably linked with the IMMH. The Hamburg shipowner and passionate collector of maritime objects dreamt early on of a museum that would show the history of seafaring in all its facets. With tireless dedication and great attention to detail, he spent decades putting together an impressive collection that forms the basis for the museum. His vision was to present seafaring as a unifying element of cultures and peoples and to show its importance for the development of humanity.
Model ships as far as the eye can see
The centrepiece of the museum is its extensive collection of model ships. From small rowing boats to imposing ocean liners, you will find detailed replicas from all eras of seafaring. In total, there are 50,000 miniature models to discover here.
More than just ships
But the IMMH offers much more than just model ships. On the various decks, you will find historical navigation instruments, paintings by famous marine artists, uniforms and medals from around the world, and numerous other exhibits that bring the history of seafaring to life. In the treasure chamber, you can marvel at ship models made of precious materials such as ivory, amber and gold. In total, there are an impressive 100,000 exhibits here.

Maritime artworks
In addition to the seafaring exhibits, the International Maritime Museum also offers changing special exhibitions. These cover topics such as marine painting, well-known shipping companies, or seafarers and their history.

A museum for the whole family
The IMMH is an experience for the whole family. Interactive stations and child-friendly explanations make a visit to the museum exciting and educational for even the youngest visitors. A special attraction for kids is the ‘Queen Mary’. The cruise giant was recreated from one million Lego bricks.
For ship fans and technology freaks, on the other hand, the bridge of the Tokyo Express is a real highlight, because here they take the helm! The ship handling simulator on deck 1 lets you and your guests experience the ports of Rotterdam, Singapore and Hamburg on board a container ship. Under the expert guidance of experienced captains, you can steer a 300-metre-long container ship through the various areas.
