Goosebumps and history lessons: the Hamburg Dungeon

In the middle of Hamburg’s historic Speicherstadt, a very special attraction lurks: the Hamburg Dungeon. Behind its dark walls, you will find a unique mixture of horror cabinet, interactive theatre and exciting history lesson. More than 600 years of Hamburg’s dark history are brought to life here – with live actors, special effects and surprising twists. Visitors to the Dungeon go on a journey into the past that gets under your skin.

What is the Hamburg Dungeon?

The Hamburg Dungeon is no ordinary museum. It is an immersive experience that appeals to all the senses. In eleven different shows, presented by professional actors in historical costumes, visitors are drawn into the darkest chapters of Hamburg’s history. Whether the plague, the Great Fire or the Inquisition – at the Dungeon, history comes alive and becomes tangible.

But it is not only the historical events that make the Dungeon so special. The way in which they are presented is also unique. The actors interact directly with the visitors, involving them in the action and ensuring an authentic and unforgettable experience.

Why is the Hamburg Dungeon so popular?

The combination of history, acting and thrills makes the Hamburg Dungeon a real crowd-puller. Both tourists and locals enjoy being taken into the dark world of the Dungeon and experiencing history up close.

The live shows, which are presented with a great sense of humour and thrills, are particularly popular. The actors are masters at captivating visitors while also teaching them historical facts.

But the Dungeon offers more than just shows. Other highlights include the freefall tower ‘The Black Death’, where you plunge from a height of 12 metres, and the water ride ‘The Storm Tide 1717’, which takes visitors through the flooded streets of Hamburg.
