JUNGFERNSTIEG AND BINNENALSTER
Two attractions – one pleasure

A stroll with tradition: Hamburg's Jungfernstieg and the Binnenalster
Jungfernstieg, Hamburg’s famous promenade, extends along the southwestern shore of the Inner Alster and has always been a magnet for locals and tourists alike. With its rich history, elegant buildings and unique view of the water, it offers a special flair. This is where shopping enthusiasts, connoisseurs and those interested in culture meet to experience the atmosphere of the Hanseatic city.
The history of the name
The Inner Alster was created as early as the 13th century by damming the Alster. The Jungfernstieg, then just a simple path along the water, quickly developed into a popular promenade. It got its name in the 17th century when wealthy families took their marriageable daughters (‘Jungfern’) for walks here to present them to potential marriage partners.
The Jungfernstieg experienced its heyday in the 19th century. Magnificent buildings such as the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten and the Alsterarkaden were built, which still characterise the cityscape today. The Alsterarkaden, with their white columns and round arches, are reminiscent of Venetian palaces and invite you to stroll and linger.
Fir tree and fountain
The Alster Fountain, which shoots water up to 60 metres into the air from April to October, can also be found on the Binnenalster. In winter, the fountain is dismantled and replaced by a large Christmas tree, which is placed on a pontoon in the same spot. This tree, affectionately known as the ‘Alstertanne’, is decorated with lights and creates a festive atmosphere during the Advent season. The Alstertanne is usually a Nordmann fir and about 15 metres high. It is donated by a different tree nursery each year and erected on the pontoon with the help of a crane. The lighting of the Alstertanne is financed by the City of Hamburg.
The Alster tree is a symbol of the Christmas season in Hamburg and is visited by many people. It is a popular photo motif and a place to enjoy the pre-Christmas season.

Shopping temple with history
The Alsterhaus, one of Germany’s most traditional department stores, is also located on the Jungfernstieg and attracts shoppers with exclusive brands and a luxurious ambience. The Alsterpavillon, a popular café and restaurant with a terrace offering a magnificent view of the Binnenalster, is located directly on the waterfront.

At the pulse of the Hanseatic city
The Jungfernstieg and the Binnenalster are not only historically significant, but are also still vibrant places today, making the heart of Hamburg beat. They combine tradition and modernity, elegance and joie de vivre, bringing the special charm of the Hanseatic city to life.
