Experience art with all your senses

The Port des Lumières in the heart of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier is much more than a conventional art gallery – it is a portal to another world. As part of the renowned Culturespaces family, which has already inspired millions of people in cities such as Paris, Amsterdam and New York, this centre for digital art is setting new standards in Hamburg’s cultural landscape. Covering an impressive area of around 3,200 m² and with a ceiling height of up to 10 metres, art is not only viewed here, but experienced with all the senses.

What exactly is the Port of Lights?

The concept is based on what is known as immersion. Using more than 80 high-performance projectors and a precise spatial sound system, moving images are projected onto the walls, floor and ceilings of the building. The physical architecture dissolves visually, and visitors find themselves surrounded by the brushstrokes of famous masters. There are no barriers and no picture frames. Visitors can move freely around the room, sit on the floor or feel the projections on their own skin as they wander through the projected landscapes.

What can you see?

The programme changes regularly and is usually devoted to the great eras and geniuses of art history. Classically, artists such as Hundertwasser, Gustav Klimt and the Dutch masters take centre stage. In a one-hour show, their most famous works are deconstructed and reanimated. For example, you can see how the golden ornaments of Klimt’s ‘The Kiss’ slowly spread across the walls or how Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ comes to life in a swirling motion, accompanied by perfectly coordinated musical dramaturgy.

In addition to the long-form formats, there are also shorter, contemporary exhibitions focusing on abstract digital art, a virtual journey back to the time of the dinosaurs, and even yoga. This diversity ensures that the architecture of the Port des Lumières appears completely different with every visit.

Why is this centre so exciting?

The fascination of Port des Lumières lies in its completely new approach to art. Here, a visit to a museum, often perceived as elitist or dry, becomes an emotional experience. It is the perfect place for people who have had little interest in classical art history up to now, but also for connoisseurs who want to experience their favourite works in gigantic detail.

The combination of technology and emotion is particularly impressive: the immersive technology creates an atmosphere that is impossible to resist. It induces a meditative state, an ‘immersion’ in aesthetics that offers a stark contrast to today’s hectic times. For Hamburg, the Port des Lumières also represents a huge leap towards becoming a digital cultural metropolis. It complements the classic offerings of the Kunsthalle and the Bucerius Kunst Forum with an innovative, technological component.
