The Fontenay: Where style and history meet

Hamburg not only has many sights, it also has stops where there is really something to see. These include the stop at the Hotel Fontenay, which is served by the red double-decker buses on City Tour A.
From an architectural point of view, the luxury hotel is a tribute to the Hanseatic city of Hamburg.
The modern yet organic architecture reflects both the urban cosmopolitan city and the extensive parkland surrounding the hotel. Three inner courtyards with patios, one of which features the Atrium Lounge, are as modern as they are unique. The lounge is a literal highlight, especially in the evening when it is illuminated by LED lights.

The namesake John Fontenay

As modern as the hotel is, which opened in 2018, it bears a name steeped in history. The same applies to the street in which it is located: Fontenay.
John Fontenay, who according to his own statements was born in the USA, came to Hamburg around 1797, became a ship broker here and was granted citizenship of the city.
During the blockade of the Elbe in 1803, however, Fontenay was busy with something else: together with a business partner, he supplied the blockaded city of Hamburg with all kinds of goods. However, it was also due to Napoleon’s blockade of the city that John Fontenay turned his back on Hamburg for several years. But in 1814, after the French had withdrawn from Hamburg, he returned and resumed his work as a ship broker.
He also bought large tracts of land adjacent to his properties at Dammtor. Eventually, the area between the Alster, Mittelweg and Badestraße came to be known as Fontenay.

Discover stately villas with double-decker buses

Today, there are three streets named after the shipbroker: Fontenay, Klein Fontenay and Fontenay-Allee. They are among the most beautiful residential streets in the city, and if you have time, you should take advantage of the hop-on hop-off service offered by the red double-decker buses and stroll through this area with its pretty, stately villas. A detour to the Alster is, of course, a must. If you want to treat yourself to something special in Hamburg, finish off with a visit to the Michelin-starred restaurant ‘Lakeside’, which offers not only excellent gourmet cuisine but also a fascinating panoramic view. Perhaps you only have time for a cocktail: then a detour to the bar of the luxury hotel is just the thing – here, too, with a fantastic view of the Alster.
