Art within reach at the Walentowski Galleries
The bustling Europa Passage on Hamburg’s Ballindamm is home to a cultural highlight that delights art lovers and tourists alike: the Walentowski Galleries – Udo Lindenberg & more and, opposite, the Walentowski Galleries – Otto’s BilderWelten. For more than ten years, these galleries have been presenting a fascinating selection of modern and contemporary art and also offering a platform for other renowned artists.
Udo Lindenberg & more
The exhibition naturally focuses on the works of Udo Lindenberg, one of Germany’s most versatile artists. Known as a panic rocker, Lindenberg has also reached a wide audience with his paintings. His distinctive ‘Likörelle’ – paintings he creates on canvas using a mixture of liqueur and watercolours – are characterised by a loose, sketch-like style and often capture the bizarre, humorous and sometimes melancholic world of the Panik Orchestra. His characteristic figures are instantly recognisable: the Panik president with his hat and cigar, the slender Udonauts and other characters from his universe. These works are not only artistically appealing, but also tell stories from an eventful life.
Otto's BilderWelten – Works of a Multi-Talented Artist
The Walentowski Galleries – Otto’s BilderWelten present works by another North German original: Otto Waalkes. The comedian and entertainer is also extremely successful as a painter. His works are – just like his stage performances – full of humour and wit. He likes to play with well-known motifs from art history, reinterpreting them in his own unique, Otto-esque way and thus creating images that make you smile. From the Mona Lisa to Edvard Munch’s The Scream – Otto’s interpretations are always original and refreshing.
An enrichment for the Europa Passage
The Walentowski Galleries round off their offering with works by other prominent artists, including the well-known actor and painter Armin Mueller-Stahl, the entertainer Helge Schneider and the maritime painter Heinke Böhnert. For art lovers who visit the Europa Passage as a shopping destination anyway, a visit to the Walentowski Galleries is a welcome addition.
The Europa Passage, one of the largest shopping centres in the Hanseatic city, offers an impressive selection of fashion, accessories and gastronomy on five floors. A visit to the gallery can therefore be ideally combined with an extensive shopping spree.
The Ottifanten double-decker bus – a Hamburg original
If you don’t feel like visiting the galleries or don’t have the time, you don’t have to miss out on Otto in Hamburg. The Ottifanten bus from Rote Doppeldecker makes sure of that. As the name suggests, it is decorated with the famous Ottifanten, aka elephants. Incidentally, these have been around since 1973. In the Hanseatic city, the Ottifanten parade on the bright red double-decker bus not only puts passengers in a good mood. The pachyderms also make motorists happy. Even when they are stuck in traffic behind the bus: the rear of the double-decker is adorned with an Ottifanten bottom.
