A journey through art history:
the Hamburger Kunsthalle
Masterpieces from the Renaissance to the present day await you at the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The museum houses one of the most important art collections in Germany and offers a comprehensive overview of 800 years of art history. From medieval altars to Renaissance and Baroque paintings to modern and contemporary works, there is something for every art lover to discover here.
A journey through the centuries
The Hamburger Kunsthalle was opened in 1869 and is located in three magnificent buildings on Glockengießerwall. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphic works from various eras. The old building contains masterpieces by the old masters, including works by Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto. The new building shows art from the 19th century, with a focus on German Romanticism and Impressionism. Among others, paintings by Caspar David Friedrich, Max Liebermann and Claude Monet can be seen here. The Gallery of Contemporary Art presents art from the 20th and 21st centuries, with works by Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Gerhard Richter.
Caspar David Friedrich: A Romantic View of the World
The Hamburger Kunsthalle also has a large collection of works by Caspar David Friedrich, one of the most important representatives of German Romanticism. His atmospheric landscapes, with their symbolic messages, have captivated many visitors. The 2024 exhibition ‘Caspar David Friedrich. Art for a New Era’ was a great success, attracting 335,000 art lovers to Hamburg. This made it the most successful exhibition in the history of the Kunsthalle.

Rendezvous of Dreams: Surrealism in Hamburg
Another highlight awaits art lovers in 2025. The exhibition ‘Rendezvous of Dreams: Surrealism in Hamburg’ will focus on Surrealism in Germany and show how the movement shaped the art and culture of the Hanseatic city. Works by artists such as Max Ernst, René Magritte and Salvador Dalí will be on display.

More than just painting
In addition to paintings, the art gallery also has an important collection of sculptures. Among them are works by Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore and other important sculptors. The Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) houses an extensive collection of drawings and graphic works from various eras. It originated from the legacy of an art dealer and collector who donated his collection of 30,000 works to the Kunsthalle in the 19th century.
A place of inspiration
The Hamburger Kunsthalle is a place of inspiration and encounter. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions and events take place regularly. The museum also offers guided tours, workshops and other educational programmes.
