Planten un Blomen: Hamburg's green oasis

The history of Planten un Blomen goes back to the 19th century. In 1821, the botanist Johann Georg Christian Lehmann laid out the first botanical garden, which formed the cornerstone of today’s park. Over time, the grounds were expanded and redesigned. In 1935, the name ‘Planten un Blomen’ was coined, which means ‘plants and flowers’ in Low German. After the Second World War, the park was rebuilt and became a popular recreational area for the citizens of Hamburg.

Today, the park offers various themed gardens, including one of the largest Japanese landscape gardens in Europe and the Old Botanical Garden. In addition, sculptures can be found throughout the park, inviting visitors to take a closer look.

Flowers and fountains

In summer, Planten un Blomen is transformed into a colourful sea of flowers. Roses, dahlias, azaleas and many other types of flowers delight visitors with their beauty. The water-lighting concerts, which take place daily from May to September, are a particular highlight. The fountains in the park lake are staged with music and light, creating a fascinating spectacle.

Autumn colours

In autumn, the Planten un Blomen park is bathed in golden colours. The leaves on the trees turn a variety of colours, inviting you to take long walks. The Japanese Garden, another highlight of the park, offers a special atmosphere with its traditional elements such as stone lanterns, waterfalls and ponds.

Winter fun

Planten un Blomen also has its charms in winter. From November to March, the park lake is transformed into a large ice rink where young and old can go skating. A cosy mulled wine stand provides the appropriate warmth from within. The botanical garden, with its tropical greenhouses, invites you to take a trip into the exotic world of plants and offers a welcome change on cold days.

Visitors are also well catered for: cafés and restaurants invite you to linger.

Planten un Blomen is a place for people of all ages to meet and relax. With its wide range of attractions and central location, the park is a popular destination for both locals and tourists.
